Marsh Kayak Fishing Tackle

Kayak Fishing for Redfish

Marsh Tackle Box

So here are the contents of my kayak fishing marsh tackle box. Specifically the tackle box I use when fishing in Louisiana though many of these baits work in Florida, Alabama, Georgia, and any where else red fish live. Below is also a video showing these lures.

When fishing the marsh, you are usually targeting redfish or speckled trout. Top water is an excellent choice for targeting and finding schools of fish. I personally use top water at all hours of the day. I especially love using top waters on windy days when you can find the calm and still waters on the backside of marsh islands and strips. Lately I’ve been on an Overcast Lure top water kick. These lures are hand painted, durable, and consistent. Some of my favorite top water colors to use in the marsh are pink, black & yellow, black & gold, chartreuse, and bone. It’s important to remember that the action you give your top water is more important than the color. I’ve caught red fish in all areas on the most outrageous colors that “shouldn’t work.” Focus on where you are placing the lure and the action. You’ll get a solid blow up.

A very important piece to my marsh arsenal is the Buggs Jig. I’ve been using the jigs for close to 3 years now and have had so much success. What makes these lures so special is that they are quiet, weedless, and durable. The fur Heath from Buggs Fishing uses puffs up so well in the water that it entices these fish to attack and inhale the jig. I mainly use the jigs when sight casting. It’s very important to me that these lures are weedless. When sight casting reds, you sometimes find that plopping a bait right in front of a fish will scare them away. In the marsh, I like to intentionally cast my lure into the grass and pull it out naturally intercepting the redfish. I have a way better hook up ratio doing this.

Of course I keep a few soft plastics on board like Boca Chica Baits, Shu Shu Lures, Chicken Boy, and many others but I am addicted to sight fishing red fish and hearing those fish smack my top water out of the water so I heavily rely on my jigs and top waters. I hope this blog has helped you out. Give it a share and let us know some of the crucial pieces to your marsh tackle box! Thanks for subscribing to our National Kayak Fishing Group and hope to see you on the water one day!
